LET'S TALK DIOR
I personally love Christian Dior and his story of how he came to be known for his fashion. As a young man, he sold his own fashion sketches for 10 cents a piece. His family wanted him to be a diplomat but Dior had a creative side and a passion for art. His father gave him money to finance a small art gallery so he could sell his own art. A couple years later Dior's mother passed and the family closed down the art gallery. He was then employed by Robert Piguet, a famous fashion designer at the time. He learned a lot from this designer and he also worked alongside Pierre Balmain but left the business when he was called into the military. Years later, after leaving the military, the richest man in France invited Dior to design for him at the Paris Fashion house. Dior declined because he wanted a fresh start and to create a fashion line under his own name. They called his first collection "The New Look". His look was very different to other designers at the time and shapes and silhouettes were his inspiration. He used hip padding and wasp-waisted corsets in his clothing, making a curvacious look. Women were used to a limited amount of fabric and were shocked when the clothing covered their legs. His designs resulted in a backlash due to the amount of fabric he used. This aggravated some people and the models at a Paris photoshoot were attacked by female vendors.

After World War II there weren't anymore fabric shortages and "The New Look" made Paris the fashion capital. I admire Dior for creating a new look even though a lot of people didn't agree with it. Taking a risk will get you noticed in the fashion world and he trusted his gut. Just think, if Christian Dior never would've declined the invite from the richest man in France; he would have still been working below other designers. HIs beautiful designs would have gone unnoticed. Dior is still a remarkably successful company and although the style of clothing has changed since the 50's, we can't forget where it all began.
